Pisco Cup 2020

Pisco Cup 2020

This month the world cup football was hosted by Pisco Bar. For the first time in the history the Netherland was present with two teams. After last years defeat in the quarter-finals we were determined to lift the cup.

Our second Dutch team was the first one to enter the pitch and was off to a flying start and crushing the Belgium team: 7-0.

Unfortunately the second game and third game was lost to the British. Partly due to a controversial red card for the captain (yes me) which is often the case in world cup tournaments. The last game of the group stage was a draw against Spain who was undefeated till then and that secured a spot in the next round of the tournament the following week.

As Netherlands B could reward themselves with a cold beer it was now up to Netherlands A to show their skills on the pitch. They were up to a slow start against Malaysia, England, and France and lost some valuable points in the first games with a draw and two losses.

The last group stage game was against Portugal, one of the favourites for the title.

the Netherlands had taken a surprising early lead and managed to get the victory over Portugal which was also good for a spot in the next round. It became a perfect day as both teams qualified themselves for the next round.

After a week of well-deserved  rest the knock-out stage was there to begin. Netherlands A kicked off against Spain. It was a clash of titans, and The Netherlands did what it could but nothing seemed to work against the Spanish that day which meant an unfortunate elimination from the tournament.

Next up was the Netherland B which had to play against the Portuguese who had been brutally defeated by the other Dutch team the week before. Apparently the Portuguese had done their homework and didn’t let them be fooled a second time. Where last week Tom Beton had many great saves he probably lost all his energy at wakeboarding earlier that morning.  We got 3-0 behind, but got back in the game as both Terence and Freek found the net, but it was a little too late, and also the Netherland B was knocked out of the tournament that day.

In the end it was France that won the cup and can name itself football world champion of KL.  We still found ourselves the winners of the tournament though where we beat all teams in the third half!

However he Dutch players blamed the somewhat disappointing result in the knock-out stage on the lack of support from the fans as spectators were not welcome at the venue due to the MCO being in place. Hopefully during next edition our supporters will be allowed to  to cheer The Netherland to a cup victory.
